Sashiko 101
Welcome to the enchanting world of Sashiko, a traditional Japanese embroidery technique that originated in the 17th century. Initially developed for mending and reinforcing fabric, Sashiko is celebrated for its practicality and simple yet striking geometric patterns.
In this beginner-friendly workshop, you will create a small item with Sashiko. Through this process, you will learn to authentically draw traditional Sashiko patterns and master the art of Sashiko Unshin (運針) — the needle movement renowned for its efficiency and meditative effects. Additionally, you'll understand the meanings behind each motif and discover techniques to sew patterns that are visually appealing from both the front and back sides. Eventually, you will be prepared to sew more complicated Sashiko patterns on your own and gain an understanding of visible mending.
Join us for this tranquil experience under the guidance of Sashiko artisan Xiaoxiao!
